January 23rd, 2026 Media Release  – BASSANO RCMP launches Operation Cold Start to reduce vehicle thefts

Bassano, Alta. – As winter temperatures fluctuate, the Bassano RCMP is set to launch Operation Cold Start, an initiative aimed at reducing the theft of idling vehicles and protecting personal belongings. This annual campaign focuses on preventing crimes of opportunity that occur when vehicles are left running, unlocked, and unattended.

Operation Cold Start will run from Sunday, February 1st to Saturday, February 7th, 2026, with officers from the Bassano RCMP performing enforcement and educational efforts to help keep vehicles safe. Officers will check unattended idling vehicles to ensure that keys are not left inside and that vehicles are properly secured.

Vehicle theft can happen anywhere, in every neighborhood, and at any time. Leaving a car unattended, even for a short period, can put personal belongings, and even passengers, at risk. This includes children, pets, and other “precious cargo.” Protecting your vehicle is not just for experienced drivers, young and new drivers are encouraged to understand the risks and take proactive steps to safeguard their vehicles.

It’s also important for all vehicle owners to know the safety features of their car. Different makes and models have varying locking, alarm, and remote start systems. By understanding your vehicle’s capabilities and limitations, you can best ensure it remains secure.

To help individuals protect their vehicles and belongings, the [Detachment] RCMP is sharing the following tips:

  1. Never leave your vehicle unattended with the keys inside.
  2. Always lock your vehicle, even when parked in a driveway or garage.
  3. Remove valuables from sight. Items left in plain view, from purses and wallets to electronics, make your car a target.
  4. Park in a visible, well-lit area whenever possible to deter opportunistic theft.
  5. Know your car’s security capabilities and limitations to better secure it.
  6. Consider using visible anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks or other deterrents.
  7. If warming up your vehicle is necessary, stay with it. Modern vehicles rarely require extended warm-up periods.
  8. Educate young or new drivers. Safe vehicle practices should be prioritized from the very beginning of their driving experience.

“Numerous times this year in Bassano, vehicles were stolen while they are left idling and unattended. The criminals who steal these vehicles are opportunistic and take advantage of our citizens trusting behavior.  Please assist us in thwarting their activities by following the precautionary measures”. – Sgt. Joe Schmidt, Bassano Detachment Commander
