To make burial arrangements or for historical inquiries, we invite you to contact the Town Office. Our cemetery administrator is kind, caring, and compassionate and takes the time to work with individuals and families as they navigate the burial process.
Providing a Burial Permit is legally required before an internment can occur. These (typically) accompany the remains given by the funeral home/crematorium. If the document has been misplaced, Vital Statistics can help with obtaining a copy.
An interment can be arranged in a short amount of time if needed. However, this cannot always be accommodated if it is a casket burial as there could be extra steps to prepare the ground, or if there is a delay in locating the Burial Permit. Speak with our cemetery administrator to discuss your interment needs.
Cemeteries typically date back to when the municipal incorporation. This could mean that burials have taken place in the same cemetery for well over 100 years. Over time, monuments may have deteriorated, the earth shifted, what was once permitted in 1911 is no longer allowed, wildlife who live on (or in) the land will make their mark. We as a municipality are invested in taking care of our cemetery and understand how important it is to our residents that this space is treated with respect and with the highest care. In cooperation with families and friends of those at rest, we strive to do our best with the maintenance of our cemetery. With that being said,
The perpetual care of headstones, monuments and graves are the responsibility of grave owners.
Bassano is a prairie community; gophers are a reality. It is not possible to eradicate the cemetery of gophers.
Concrete grave covers, which were common many years ago, are no longer permitted to be installed in our cemetery. It is not required to remove any that exist today, however the cost to remove one remains with the family. Our public works department can assist in some instances with the removal of grave covers for a fee. Contact our cemetery administrator for more information.
Historically, we as a society have not always kept great burial records. Only in recent years have we started consistently filing burial plot purchase receipts, burial permits, next of kin/contact information of those at rest. Due to this, if a change to a plot is requested by a family member, we might need to ask for other records to show the request is coming from someone who is permitted to do so.
