We seek a dedicated and skilled individual to join our Public Works team as the Public Works and Parks Laborer to contribute to the operations of an active, growing community of 1,216.

Position Overview

The public works department is comprised of a small, dedicated team of four full-time and permanent positions that handle all aspect of municipal public works operations meaning the scope of responsibilities is highly varied. The position we are seeking to fill is Public Works and Parks Laborer. This versatile role combines labor intensive demands, technical expertise with operational support to maintain and enhance public infrastructure, parks, and greenspaces. This position involves a range of responsibilities, including grounds/public works maintenance/labor, tree maintenance, park maintenance, water meter reading, small equipment operation, janitorial, trades assistance/support, and basic administrative tasks. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of mechanical skills, problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, a desire to learn, and a strong commitment to community service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Grounds Maintenance Green Space, Parks, Trees: Undertake landscaping and grounds upkeep to ensure a clean and attractive environment. Maintain the aesthetics of all greenspaces, parks, flowers, and trees.
  • Facility Maintenance: Support routine janitorial of publicly owned facilities, including general maintenance.
  • General Public Works Support: Assist with all public works operations in a support role. Workings with other tradespeople to maintain the full function and operability of the town (e.g. roads, back alleys, utility systems, special projects, building maintenance, overall community cleanliness).
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operate and maintain various small machinery, mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and skid steer.
  • Administrative Functions: Support and maintain records, manage inventory, perform tailgate and safety meeting functions to support overall department operations.
  • Data Collection: Gather data for maintenance logs and reports, contributing to planning and improvement efforts. Accurately capture and report water meter readings on a bi-monthly basis.
  • Community Engagement: Interact with residents to provide information and address public works concerns where applicable.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with other team members and departments to coordinate and implement municipal projects.

Qualifications

  • A valid driver’s license and any relevant certifications.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Thrives in an outdoor environment in labor intensive projects during all seasons.
  • Proficiency with hand tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Previous experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field is preferred.

Position Overview

This is the perfect job for someone who strives to make meaningful and direct impacts in the community through the use of their strong communication, organization, administrative, and relationship building skills. As an FCSS Coordinator, the role is typically a blend of community development, leadership, strategic planning, governance, and program oversight. In this role, you will have the opportunity to build on your exceptional communication, customer service and conflict resolution skills as you provide professional and confidential client reception, information, and referral services to the public. The regional community is supported with a fantastic team of dedicated and caring professionals who are responsible for the delivery of preventive social programs and diverse support services. The position requires self motivation as you take autonomy in creating a well-organized office environment that includes managing the document management systems (electronic and filing), organizing meetings, database entry and maintenance, and client program registration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, development, and delivery of preventative social programs that meet local community needs and align with FCSS legislation.
  • Be first point of contact for clients and connect them to the appropriate offered programs and/or assess clients’ needs and provide information and/or referral.
  • Operate within the parameters of confidentiality in the FCSS framework.
  • Ensure all programs and services comply with the Alberta FCSS Act, Regulation, and Program Handbook guidelines.
  • Manage FCSS budgets, funding agreements, grants, and financial reporting to ensure responsible use of municipal and provincial funds.
  • Provide core program support to the FCSS team which includes but is not limited to; registration, newsletters, event support, invoice management and ordering/purchasing.
  • Provide core administrative support to the FCSS team and the CAO which includes but is not limited to; minutes, collating statistics, editing documents, and website lead.
  • Promote community engagement, volunteerism, and public awareness through events, communications, outreach, and collaborative initiatives.
  • Monitor program outcomes, collect community feedback, and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of FCSS initiatives to support continuous improvement.
  • Maintain knowledge of community resources and identify gaps in client trends.
  • Supervise, support, and evaluate FCSS staff, contractors, and volunteers while ensuring a positive and collaborative workplace culture.
  • Participate in Emergency Social Services response training as required.

Education & Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Office Administration or Human Service field preferred, other educational skills or background will be considered.
  • Additional training or courses in human service field (asset).
  • Valid Alberta Class Five (5) Driver License (required).
  • 2 years of related experience in administration and/or a Human Service field (asset).
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft office programs (particularly Excel), with the ability to independently create and edit a variety of documents and spreadsheets (required).
  • Excellent customer service, organizational and time management skills (required).
  • Knowledge of community social resources (preferred).
  • Experience in a municipal setting (preferred).

This level is a warning and may be upgraded to a Fire Restriction of Fire Ban if conditions do not approve. Always have water nearby and fully extinguish your fire.
