There is an active RCMP detachment located within the Town under Sergeant leadership. Working collaboratively with the Town Council local policing priorities are established on an annual basis.
In addition to RCMP presence in Bassano, the Town contracts Community Peace Officer (CPO) services from the County of Newell. The CPO is hired to support the Town’s Bylaw Enforcement Division and is active on a weekly basis. The CPO takes direction from the Chief Administrative Officer to enforce local bylaws established by the council. Bylaws can be found on the website under GOVERNMENT.
1. Land Use Bylaw
3. Traffic Bylaw
5. Dog Control Bylaw
2. Community Standards Bylaw
4. Fire Bylaw
6. Cat Control Bylaw
For the 2024/25 period, RCMP policing priorities remain as:
Community engagement through enhanced awareness and education;
Enhanced road safety through traffic engagement;
Crime reduction.
We encourage our community to focus on Emergency Preparedness. Unexpected situations happen every day and the more we focus on preparedness the better equipped we are as a community to respond.
The Government of Alberta has extensive resources related to Emergency Preparedness from how to build emergency kits, to developing evacuation plans, preparing to care for pets, and more. Find it all here.
In an emergency, you are never alone. We have professionally trained Fire Services. The Bassano Fire Department forms part of Newell Regional Fire Services. Our volunteer fire department is active attending to over 125 calls per annum. They respond and support our community in some of the most challenging of times from fires, floods, MVC, farming, and water incidents. They also show up as safe and friendly faces in the community volunteering at local functions, hosting games, and leading community-building projects like the outdoor rink.
Each member of our volunteer fire service brings diverse and unique skill sets. They train on a regular basis under the leadership of Bassano Fire Chief Cory Cochrane.

Our volunteer firefighters are constantly growing and learning. As a member of the Bassano Fire Department, you can participate in all kinds of fire and rescue training/exercises. Training helps prepare individuals when they respond to various emergency situations.
There are many ways you and your family can become more prepared. You can build emergency kits to help you ‘grab and go’. You can make sure you have enough supplies at home in case you have to take shelter for an extended period. In either case, your goal will be to have enough supplies to keep you and your family safe, warm and comfortable. For more information on emergency preparedness check out alberta.ca.
Yes, a fire pit permit is required in Bassano. Details under SERVING YOU – Forms.
