Household & Commercial Recycling Options

We acknowledge decades of volunteer efforts to establish recycling in Bassano. In 2024, a new partnership was formed, and BARRA turned over its recycling operations to the Newell Regional Landfill and Newell Recycling. Large recycle bins are located at 702 – 1st Avenue for use 24/7. This includes cardboard and paper. Tin and electronics are accepted at the Bassano Transfer Station.

When using these recycling services, be respectful. Do not leave waste behind, only recycle what is recyclable, and take the rest home.

In addition to standard household and commercial recycling, there are other ways you can recycle used items by supporting social programs in Bassano.

  • Participate in the annual Kick-it to the Curb event hosted by FCSS.
  • Donate your winter clothes (jackets, pants, boots, gloves, toques, scarves) to FCSS and help those in need during long Alberta winters.
  • Post used items on the Buy and Sell or Facebook Marketplace.
  • Donate gently used items to a second-hand store.

By working together, we can keep unnecessary waste out of the landfill.

Vehicle Recycling Program

It happens, you acquire an unwanted vehicle through an estate, you buy a fixer-upper and never quite find the time to fit it up, or you simply have too many vehicles. Next thing you know, you receive an unwanted call, letter, or visit from a member of the Town’s Bylaw Enforcement Division telling you it’s time to get rid of that vehicle. The Bassano Fire Department can help you put that unwanted vehicle to good use!

The Bassano Fire Department accepts vehicles for training. If you would like to donate your unwanted vehicle, contact the Town Office and we will help you arrange for its disposal. The vehicle must be signed over, and it will be cut up for training, and eventually sent in as scrap metal.

Alternatively, take advantage of Donate a Car Canada. This organization will pick up your unwanted vehicle and provide a charitable tax receipt thanks to your generosity.

Residential & Commercial Garbage Bins

All properties in Bassano are entitled to a roll-out garbage bin. A garbage bin is provided when you sign up for your municipal utility account at the Town Office. All property owners are charged for solid waste regardless of the bin being used as a share of the overall cost to manage the Newell Regional Landfill where the waste is disposed of.

If you are a commercial or industrial business owner/operator that requires contract waste services, you must make arrangements with private service providers.

For those taking advantage of the municipal waste service, pick-up is every Wednesday unless otherwise posted due to holiday scheduling. Wheel your bin to the curb or the back alley, wherever your designated pick-up is by 7:00 a.m. on Wednesdays.

  • Bins MUST be accessible and not blocked by vehicles for pick-up.
  • Bins MUST NOT be overflowing or they will not be picked up.
  • If you break a bin wheel, contact the Town Office for a replacement.
